Conference Announcement and 2nd Call for Papers

Mission  

The time for our next (5th) TICH Annual Scientific Conference to be hosted jointly by the Tropical Institute of Community Health and Development (TICH) and the Great Lakes University of Kisumu (GLUK) is fast approaching. As always, the conference will be held in Kisumu, Kenya from 3rd – 6th May 2008.

The conference theme is “The transformation approaches to Health and Development in Africa” You are invited to submit abstracts under the following sub-themes:

1. Sub-theme 1: Systems Development and Management
2. Sub-theme 2: Human Resources Development and Management
3. Sub-theme 3: Community Based Development and Management

In addition to presentations of scientific papers and posters, the conference offers opportunity for roundtables and workshops. The following roundtables and workshops have been proposed. However, individuals and institutions may propose more topics of interest to them so long as there is funding for it. The proposed roundtables and workshops are:

Roundtables

The roundtables will favour discussions and exchanges among researchers and policy makers to facilitate greater policy agreement. The proposed roundtables include:

1. Sustaining Community Based Workers
2. The role of Traditional Birth Attendants
3. Addressing the Human Resource for Health Crisis
4. Waiting Homes in enhancing Health Facility Deliveries
5. Preventive impact of male circumcision
6. Exclusive breastfeeding in resource poor settings.

Skills Building Workshops

These sessions provide opportunity for participants interested in strengthening their skills and knowledge in selected topical areas. The proposed include:

1. Nursing Leadership Strengthening
2. Sustainable Community Based Health Initiatives
3. The role of Communication in Health and Development
4. Research to Policy and Practice
5. Infant and Child Nutrition
6. Nutrition for PLWHA
7. Palliative Care for the terminally Ill
8. Continuing Professional Development and Mentorship
9. Managing Acute Emergencies
10. OBAs
